Los Angeles County Wildfires - Updates for Kern Health Systems Providers

On January 7, 2025, California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a State of Emergency in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties due to wildfires. The fires destroyed homes and businesses and displaced enrollees and health care providers.

Please note the following updates for Kern Health Systems (KHS) providers affected by wildfires in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties.

Prior Authorization

Kern Health Systems is extending the duration of existing prior authorizations by 180 calendar days. This extension gives affected providers more time to deliver quality care without having to submit new requests for services that have already been authorized.

Claims

Additionally, Kern Health Systems has extended the claims submission deadlines for both contracted and non-contracted affected providers to help maintain a smooth process during this challenging period. Providers now have 365 days from the date of service to submit claims.

In cases of overpayment, the timeframe for affected providers to submit a dispute has also been extended from 30 working days to 180 calendar days.

Displaced Providers

Providers displaced by the Los Angeles and Ventura Counties wildfires are permitted to continue delivering care from suitable alternative locations—such as mobile clinics or temporary sites—through September 2025.
