Dental care for children

For babies

  • Wipe gums twice a day with a soft, clean cloth after the first and last meal. This lowers bacteria and sugar that can cause problems later.
  • When teeth come in, start brushing twice a day with a soft, small-bristled toothbrush and plain water.
  • Take your baby to the dentist by your baby’s first birthday to spot signs of problems early.
  • Ask your dentist or doctor about fluoride varnish as soon as your baby’s first tooth appears.

For children

  • Brush their teeth twice a day with toothpaste.
  • Help your young child brush their teeth until they have good brushing skills.
  • Ask your child’s dentist about dental sealants when needed.

Get ready for kindergarten

Children starting kindergarten are required to have a dental exam by May 31 of the child’s first year in school or within 12 months before starting school.

The screening must be done by a licensed dentist or registered dental hygienist.

Children can get screened at one of these places:

  • School screenings
  • Private dental offices
  • Dental clinics
  • Local health events
