UTIs in children
A urinary tract infection (UTI) is common in children. A UTI is inflammation of part of the system that takes urine out of the body. Most infections are caused by bacteria.
Bubble baths may irritate the urethra, and bacteria can grow. Incorrect wiping, delaying going to the bathroom and having constipation are linked to UTIs.
Common symptoms
- Sudden need to pee (urinate)
- Trouble urinating
- Pain above the pubic bone
- Blood in the urine
- Back pain or side pain, below the ribs
- Tiredness
Help prevent UTIs
Have your child:
- Drink fluids
- Empty their bladder fully
- Wipe from front to back
Have your child see their doctor for a diagnosis.
