Feeling down after having a baby?

Having a baby can be such a happy time. It's also not unusual to feel a bit down or sad after giving birth. Those feelings are called "baby blues." They usually go away in one or two weeks.

Sometimes the feelings are more intense and last longer. When this happens, it may be postpartum depression (PPD).

PPD is a mental health condition that affects some women after giving birth. Symptoms are reported in about 1 in 8 moms.

Common signs are:

  • Feeling guilty, shameful, or worthless
  • Unusual crying or sadness
  • Loss of interest, joy, or pleasure in things you used to enjoy
  • Possible thoughts of harming the baby or yourself

The first step is reaching out for support. You can talk to your doctor, family, friends, or other people you trust for help. The sooner you get help, the sooner you can feel better.
