RSV in kids: Early signs parents can't ignore
What is RSV infection?
Respiratory syncytial virus infection (RSV) is like a bad cold. It causes the same symptoms. Most children have it at least once by age 2. While RSV usually goes away on its own, it can become dangerous and require hospitalization.
What are the symptoms?
- Cough
- Stuffy or runny nose
- Mild sore throat
- Earache
- Fever
Babies with RSV may also have low energy, act fussy, or be less hungry than usual.
How is it diagnosed?
- The most common test collects a sample of the fluid in the back of the nose.
- The doctor may want to do testing if your child may be likely to have other problems.
How is RSV treated?
- Giving medicine to stop a fever.
- Pregnant moms can get an RSV vaccine to protect their baby before birth.
- Babies can get RSV antibodies if they're under 8 months or at higher risk.
