STIs and pregnancy: Know your risks

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can still be contracted when pregnant. This can affect the mother and baby during pregnancy, if not treated.

Síntomas

  • Skin rashes or sores
  • Painful sex
  • Vaginal itching

Most STIs do not have signs or symptoms, so getting tested is the only way to know if you have an STI.

Effect on pregnancy

Some STIs can be passed to the baby during all periods of the pregnancy: during pregnancy, labor and delivery, and breastfeeding.

STIs are linked to problems such as:

  • Preterm labor
  • Poor growth
  • Low birth weight
  • Abnormalities

Treatment and recovery

STI testing is important to prevent health problems and can be treated with your provider. Some STIs can be treated with antibiotics that are safe during pregnancy. Other medications used are antiviral and can reduce the risk of passing the infection to the baby.
