African American men: Don't ignore your mental health!
Mental health is believed to be taboo in many cultures. African American men face more stigma than other races. African American men are more likely to have a mental illness. However, they are less likely to get help.
What's stopping you from getting care?
- Believing that mental health problems are not real.
- Not trusting the health care system.
- Not having access to doctors that look like you.
- Being told that something isn't covered by your doctor.
The third leading cause of death for African Americans 15 to 24 years old is suicide. If you notice recent major changes in thinking, feeling, actions or mood change, talk to your doctor.
When your mental illness and depression aren't treated, you are more at risk to use drugs or alcohol. This can lead to homelessness, going to jail and even suicide. Men's mental health is just as important as regular health. Give us a call at 1-800.391.2000, option 7. Our behavior team is ready to help you Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
