Living well: Insights for chronic illness

Did you know? Six in 10 Americans have at least one chronic illness.

A chronic illness is a condition that lasts one year or more. It needs ongoing medical attention or limits activities of daily living or both.

Some chronic illnesses include:

  • Blood pressure.
  • Heart disease.
  • Diabetes.
  • Stroke.
  • Obesity.
  • Cancer.
  • Tooth decay.

Many preventable chronic illnesses are caused by a list of risk behaviors, like:

  • Poor nutrition.
  • Physical inactivity.
  • Smoking.
  • Too much alcohol use.

By getting preventive care and avoiding these risks, your chances of staying well, feeling good and living longer are increased.
