HIV: Know your status
When it comes to HIV, the question is straightforward: Have you been tested?
HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, is a virus that attacks the body's immune system. It can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), which is the final stage of infection with HIV. It happens when the body's immune system is badly damaged because of the virus.
The virus can be transmitted through unprotected sex or by sharing needles. HIV doesn't always cause symptoms. The only way to know for sure is to get tested.
You should get tested at least once a year if you:
- Are a sexually active gay or bisexual man
- Have more than one sex partner
- Share needles or syringes
There's no cure for HIV. But early treatment can help control the virus and reduce the chance that it turns into AIDS.
Talk to your health care provider about testing and your HIV risk factors. Knowing your status can help keep you-and others-safe and healthy.
