Exercise is a mood booster

Exercise (physical activity) has many benefits for your health. This includes helping you:

  • Manage and prevent illness
  • Lose weight
  • Build muscle mass and strength

Physical activity kicks up endorphin levels, the body's "feel-good" chemical. It is made by the brain and spinal cord and gives feelings of happiness.

For your mental health, exercise can help:

  • Reduce stress
  • Improve your focus and memory
  • Give you more energy
  • Boost your self-esteem
  • Prevent and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety

How do I start exercising?

When starting to exercise, it's important to know your limits. Think of ways you can add exercise into your daily routine and lifestyle.

At your own pace, try to build up your physical activity each day. If you have an injury or a disability that makes it hard to exercise, ask your doctor to suggest options for you.
